Value: A Traveller’s first dive beneath the veil of the simulation.
Ever since lifting off from my first planet on launch day, Dualshock 4 in hand, I’d been fascinated by what the Skyscraper Engine could offer. The seamless, infinite procedural worlds of the universe captivated me dearly, but I could never stop thinking about the systems that made it work, and how to mold them to my liking. I’d watch YouTubers, streamers, and even gaming media experience modded vistas and landscapes I’d never be able to see on my PS4, longingly hoping for a window into the PC Universe.
Years later, I’d finally managed to build a device capable of running this shared dream in all its glory. After a quick settings check, I immediately bolted off to download all of the modding tools I’d spent the past month reading up on, eager to participate in the modding community at large. After several conversations with the modding discord, a collective of the most innovative, helpful and talented individuals I’d ever met in the community with years of knowledge, I jumped straight into building out my first few (rudimentary) mods.
A short while after that, Hello Games would start to leave unused content in their update files. All of my exposure to datamines before then, though, came in the form of YouTubers reporting on conversations held in hidden corners of arcane Discord servers which weren’t always easy to track down. Sometimes the information might’ve been mixed up with the creator’s own speculation, and that would make separating facts really difficult. This drove me to post about my findings and experiments more publicly, with as little speculation as possible; a niche with shockingly little activity.
I could’ve never imagined the response this garnered. At the time of writing, over 2000 Travellers have joined my journey of documenting unused features. A humble, overly zealous obsession with a Universe’s inner workings let me carve out a spot for myself in this wonderful community, a milestone I’d NEVER imagined reaching. I’m eternally thankful to all of the amazing Travellers who support my strange hobby; their love and support mean the universe to me as I continue trying to document the cutting room floor of Dolphin House’s most famous residents.
